Dear Lazyweb,

1. How do I tell Windows that the default app for .odt files is OpenOffice Writer and not Microsoft Word?

2. Cat Lady's tablet laptop has a relatively short screen height. Some things, like large dialog boxes (including, ironically, some from Windows itself) and Flash-based webpages, assume a minimum screen size, and one just "can't get there from here" to get to the bottom of said interfaces. Isn't there something that lets you have a virtual desktop size that's larger than the physical screen, and then simply allows vertical scrolling? While it'd be annoying to use at times, at least then she could use these interfaces.

kthxbi!

1) [WinXP Pro] Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types (tab) > scroll down to ODx (types of OpenOffice files)

2) No idea, sorry.

Okay, #2 was bugging me, so I went searching.

According to this thread apparently it can be done with software (from MS, see link in thread) but otherwise it's a default thing that Cannot Be Done By Mere Mortals.

So, I guess the only (non)solution would be to get a larger external monitor. Sorry.

#2: Had you seen that that thread has a second page where the PowerStrip utility is recommended as a solution? :-) Though $30 seems a bit pricey for what she needs, that post seems to imply that one can just use it to create the additional (pseudo?)-driver(s) for 1024x768 (or 1600x1200 or whatever), complete with the desired scroll bars, and then actually uninstall the utility before the trial period ends. Thanks again! :-)

Hadn't seen the second page, no. Glad you did!

#1: That worked; thanks! Windows Explorer (nee File Manager) still shows an annoying "W" logo, but I can certainly live with that as long as double-click doesn't actually bring up Word.

In the File Types tab, there's an Advanced button under which you can choose your icon (which should then override the Word icon, although associating OO with text should do that automagically).

Alternately, this page may help. Just another way of doing the same thing (which may correct the icon issue).

Thanks, though the icon's no biggie. I'm more just annoyed at their attitude, i.e., "Oh, sure, come up with an open source alternative, but we're never going to let you forget that we still own the operating system [for now]."

1. Right-click on an ODT file, go to "open with," then from there to "choose default program."

2. No idea.

Thanks (though that particular menu entry hadn't yet been added when XP v. 5.1 SP 3 was released). [info]stagemanager offers some alternate approaches that also work. Thanks again! :-)
